Koyo Kouoh (1967–2025) | A Worker Of The Spirit
The first African woman appointed to curate the Venice Art Biennale, Koyo Kouoh, passed away on May 10, 2025.
Remembering Koyo Kouoh–a visionary curator and true “worker of the spirit” whose impact on contemporary African art is profound and lasting. From her roots in Cameroon to leading Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, Kouoh’s journey was marked by passion, resilience, and a deep commitment to artists and communities across the continent and beyond. Her untimely passing just before announcing her plans for the 2026 Venice Biennale leaves a space that can never quite be filled. But her legacy lives on–through the institutions she built, the artists she championed, and the stories she told.
