‘Ina (Light)’ | Fighting The Darkness Of Oppression Through Dance

by GRIOT - Published on 10/01/2019

Facing and defeating the fear of oppression and the darkness that it emanates, abandoning oneself to chaos in order to reach, through the movement of bodies, the light, the freedom and a sense of tranquility.

This is the ethos of Ina (Light), the new short film by director and filmmaker Aneil Karia, created for Random Acts (Channel 4) in collaboration with Sadler’s Wells, the renowned creative organisation dedicated to the world of dance.

The stunning visual is animated by the choreography of Alesandra Seutin, the first and only UK performer to be chosen by the iconic Senegalese choreographer, dancer and pedagogist Germaine Acogny—founder of the École des Sables, she is considered the mother of African contemporary dance—to pass on her technique.

In Ina (Light) Seutin, who explores the black body and the challenges, the preconceptions and the solutions related to it by combining African, urban and contemporary dance styles, is accompanied by Randolph Matthews, who also curated the superb soundtrack, Nandi Bhebhe and Kennedy Jr Muntanga, with whom she fights darkness until embracing the light by dancing.
