In 2015, Ghanaian artist El Anatsui won the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 56th Venice Biennale, curated by Nigerian-born Okuwi Enwezor — the first African to hold this role. This marked an important milestone for art from Africa and its diaspora and coincided with the early days of the Rome-based editorial platform GRIOTmag, founded by Johanne Affrico in February 2015 as an alternative hub celebrating creative and cultural diversity through art by Africans and members of the African diaspora.

Celine Angbeletchy (co-editor), and Eric Otieno Sumba (contributing-editor), joined along the way, and ten years on, GRIOTmag looks back on a decade’s worth of editorial content: exclusive interviews with leading artists in their respective fields, sharp opinion pieces on current matters of interest, short documentaries, as well as an archive of news and analysis on the ups and downs of the global art scene.

Since the end of 2021, GRIOT has expanded its work to include more live, in-person programming through SPAZIO GRIOT, a nomadic space for research, process, experimentation, discussion, and education in visual and performing arts, music, and literature. At yet another historic juncture, we are looking forward to celebrating this milestone with you in Rome, where it all started!
